Research Study Publication
Insights from the Field: How North Carolina Local Government Climate Communications Compare to IPCC Guidelines: The academic journal Sustainability and Climate Change published my research that I did for my honors thesis. The purpose of this study is to understand how local governments in North Carolina communicate with residents about their climate change programming. Twelve local government sustainability employees participated in interviews about how they communicated with and received input from residents about such programs. Interview transcripts were coded and analyzed using Atlas.ti 9, and communications approaches were compared to Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) recommendations. Participants' communications could be characterized as applying some of the IPCC recommendations, and findings suggest opportunities for greater adoption of IPCC strategies in local government communication about climate programs. Blog topics have included features of member organizations, features of clean energy leaders for Black History Month and Women's History Month, and summaries of episodes of the Squeaky Clean Energy podcast. For my master's thesis, I created a communications plan with NCSEA as the client. The goal was to encourage North Carolina residents to support residential solar. I analyzed survey data to inform the plan, which involved tactics like news media relations, partnerships with solar installers, and a combination of paid, earned, shared, and owned media. The goal of these stories is to show how businesses can create a healthy planet and to spread hope and inspiration for solving environmental challenges. Other Coursework
The Compelling Case of Compelled Speech About Climate Change: For my media law course, I wrote a research paper about proposed SEC rules that would require public companies to share certain information about climate change mitigation efforts and greenhouse gas emissions. It was accepted to the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication Southeast Colloquium! Powering Confidence (Right): For my digital storytelling course, I created a video featuring a student's leadership in getting solar panels on a UNC building.
